Attributes of a STEM Education

What about the curriculum and materials? Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) is a meta-discipline, the “creation of a discipline based on the integration of other disciplinary knowledge into a new ‘whole’.” This interdisciplinary bridging among discrete disciplines is now treated as an entity, STEM. It offers a chance for students to make sense of the world rather than learn isolated bits and pieces of phenomena. Yet, STEM is really greater than interdisciplinary. It is actually transdisciplinary in that it offers a  “multi-faceted whole” with greater complexities and new spheres of understanding that ensure the integration of disciplines.

Project Lead the Way:

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) provides rigorous and innovative STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education curricular programs used in middle and high schools across the U.S. PLTW's comprehensive curriculum for engineering and biomedical sciences has been collaboratively designed by PLTW teachers, university educators, engineering and biomedical professionals and school administrators to promote critical thinking, creativity, innovation and real-world problem solving skills in students.

The hands-on, project-based engineering and biomedical sciences courses engage students on multiple levels, expose them to areas of study that they typically do not pursue, and provide them with a foundation and proven path to college and career success.

Interdisciplinary Learning and STEM

Engineering challenges allow for knowledge and skills from different curriculum areas to be applied and for the development of engineering in education skills and attributes.

STEM in and Across the Curriculum

The STEM initiative gave schools the opportunity to review their curriculum provision and develop connections between these naturally related and now high priority curriculum areas.

STEM to STEAM -- Recognizing the Value of Creative Skills in the Competitiveness Debate

There is certainly no question that STEM education and STEM skills are a vital part of this country's edge, but many educators would argue that STEM is missing a key set of creativity-related components that are equally critical to fostering a competitive and innovative workforce, and those skills are summarized under the letter "A" for Arts.
