Part 2: Design

"Grabber" to launch inquiry & generate interest:

I will begin with listening activity using red, white and blue balloons. The students have prior knowledge that sound is made up of vibrations, so they will "feel" the music by holding the balloons while the music is being played. I will play "Stars and Stripes Forever" with a strong driving beat. I will also have them "feel/listen" to a few other patriotic songs comparing/contrasting the "feelings" they get when listening to the music.

We will discuss the musical elements that made certain songs vibrate more through the balloons while others may not have vibrated nearly as much. We will then lead into a class discussion about how music can make you feel emotionally...patriotic music more specifically.

I will show the students a "tribute to America" video clip highlighting people & their dreams in America. We will discuss how the music accompanying the video made the movie more emotional.

I will then explain that it is going to be their project to create a similar presentation. By looking through the rubric, we will discuss specific expectations and continue on from there.

Looks like it will be very exciting for the students and you and the staff. I am going to make sure I share this project with our music teachers. I will be interested in their feedback. I know it is probably easier to concentrate on just one application like powerpoint and for the first time through the project I would recommend keeping it simple and just using one program like powerpoint. I would look to expand it in the future with more options for the projects with other types of presentations like movies, podcasts and many of the web 2.0 types of sites like found here - http://www.go2web20.net/#tag:presentation

Programs like http://animoto.com/ Animoto are great.

I would think of that challenge for the future as you fine tune this project and students get more experience. Many different directions you could go with the technology on this project
Looks great, I will be excited to hear how it goes!

I think the interviewing component of this project is going to be very powerful for the students. It will create a sense of empathy for the men and women who fight for our country. A mini-lesson on interviewing skills may be helpful for this component.

This is a great project. I love that fact that it not only addresses music education standards but it also fits perfectly with the Core Democratic Value of Patriotism. I would definitely discuss your project with the classroom teacher, so that this project can be extended in the regular classroom's social studies curriculum.

There is so much good with in this PBL experience...understanding music and it's impact, influence on service men and women, to self reflection. Connecting with the classroom teacher on Core Democratic Values is a deepening connection for the students, along with opportunities to present in ways other than powerpoint as options. Some students might do well with multimedia. But that may have to wait until next year. Solid project!

What a great topic. Music can evoke such powerful emotions in people. I think this unit is going to help the students understand patriotic music and what it's significance is in their life as well as the significance it has on our country's history. Your resources are great and would be useful to anyone studying this topic. I can see extensions of this project leading back to the classroom curriculum as well.

Music is definitely a way kids can be connected to their country. I love your driving question and know that the students in your class will have a deeper understanding after completing the project. I love the interviewing component as well. The students will gain the understanding from another person's perspective.
