Kathleen OConnor-Seeds in Space

 Project Overview Part 1: Define

Teacher(s) Name(s):     Kathleen O'Connor

Name of Project

What do we need to grow plants in space? Duration:   3 weeks

Subject/Course:

8th Grade Science       Grade Level:   8

Other subject areas to be included, if any:

Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts

Project Idea

Summary of the issue, challenge, investigation, scenario, or problem:

The project will investigate methods of growing seeds in space. This includes discovering an efficient way to provide the plant with water, food and a growth chamber. Students will work with a experimental group of seeds that have travelled to space and a control group of seeds that have not travelled to space.

Students will create a growth chamber and develop a watering and feeding process that will maximize growth of plants.

Students will evaluate the success of their design by comparing the control and experimental group.

Driving Questions How can we grow food for astronauts who are traveling long distances in space?

Knowledge and Skills Needed by Students

to successfully complete culminating products and performances, and do well on summnative assessments

Scaffolding/Materials/Lessons to be Provided

by the project teacher, other teachers, experts, mentors, community members--Describe the active teaching needed to support learning

Students will need to understand how plants grow and produce food. -> Proper writing technique.
Students will need to know how human bodies use plants to get energy. -> Math skills-Measuring,plan designs
Students will use the scientific method to investigate .what plants need to grow effectively and will use control and experimental groups to test that theory -> Presentation Techniques.
   -> Scientific method usage.
